Hewitt's work is rooted in landscape. Her gestural painterly technique frequently moving towards abstraction. Places and images from memory are re-constructed. Dynamic, multi-layered paintings fluctuate between what is legible and the abstract.

Hewitt is interested in the physical, three dimensional nature of paint. There is an expressive use of colour built up in a series of layers to create depth and texture . Dark deep rich hues are played off bright almost ugly tones.
